MUSA Cancun helps the environment
MUSA Cancun is an artificial reef with three purposes: First, to relieve stress from coral reefs so they can regenerate and recover from the damage. Second, to host marine life like: corals, sponges, algae and fish. And third, to turn deserted sections of sea bed to coral reefs full of life.
It has three mesmerizing galleries
Manchones, Punta Nizuc and Punta Sam are the names of the galleries. Most of the statues are from an incredible collection called “The Silent Evolution”. It features 400 individual sculptures and some are inspired by the local people in Puerto Morelos, which is where Jason DeCaires created the sculptures.
Incredibly talented artists made MUSA
Jason DeCaires Taylor was the first of 5 talented artists to collaborate in the Museum. The other four being Karen Salinas Martínez, Roberto Díaz Abraham, Rodrigo Quiñones Reyes and Salvador Quiroz Ennis. They made the sculptures with different textures and details to promote coral growth and look stunning.
The museum changes every single year
As corals, sponges and algae grow in the sculptures, their look changes and blends with the environment. The sculptures also become more appealing for species like fish, lobsters, shrimp, turtles and even rays. So each year the Museum gets more crowded by colorful sea life you could snorkel with!
You get to choose how to visit the Museum
There are three options for visiting the artificial reef MUSA: Snorkeling, Diving or on board of a Submarine. Snorkeling in the museum is a great fit for everyone because it doesn’t require heavy equipment like diving does. But it still allows everyone to see the statues from up close!
