7 Things you probably didn’t know about Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is the place to discover mountains, forests and rock formations unfolding before some of Mexico’s most gorgeous beaches. Nestled along the Pacific coast in Bahia de Banderas (Bay of Flags), Puerto Vallarta has all the necessary ingredients of an ideal vacation.   1. This year, Puerto Vallarta celebrates its 100th year as a municipality and the beautiful city on the Pacific Coast will be celebrating.
  2. Puerto Vallarta has its origins in 1851. It was master planned to fill the need of having a port in the Banderas Bay. Mining towns, like San Sebastian, are located within 100 miles of Vallarta in the Sierra Madre mountains. These mines were producing a large amount of the Mexican silver.
  3. Originally the name was not Puerto Vallarta. It was attributed the name “Las Peñas” due to a geographical feature: Las Peñas that seem to emerge from the sea in front of Mismaloya, popularly known as “Los Arcos”.
  4. More than 60 years later, on May 31, 1918, the creation of the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta was promulgated.
  5. “La Noche de la Iguana” was filmed, so the names of Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and John Huston were forever linked to Puerto Vallarta.
  6. The Municipality of Puerto Vallarta is characterized by a mountain architecture that can be enjoyed 100% since it is the only municipality that totally prohibits advertising that affects or invade facilities and infrastructure.
  7. The historical center is located next to the sea, a feature that differentiates it from many other coastal towns in Mexico.
