The Dominican Republic, has been closely monitoring the global situation in order to move forward with plans to begin receiving vacationers to the country and recently announced that the country would temporarily provide travel assistance insurance, including Covid-19 coverage, to vacationers who visit the country through the end of December 2020.
In a press release, the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader Corona, outlined their Tourism Recovery Plan for Covid-19, which aims to take care of the health, well being, and safety of local and foreign travelers. “Our goal is to minimize the effects of the pandemic and promote a responsible recovery that prioritizes health, maximizes the potential for job creation and economic growth, and encourages the sector to continue to develop in a sustainable way,” said Luis Abinader Corona.
The benefits of the Temporary Travel Insurance Plan include:
- Coverage for emergencies
- Telemedicine services
- Long-stay accommodation and flight change costs in the event of a Covid-19 contagion situation.
The insurance will be completely free with the Dominican Government will pay 100% of the cost. In order to receive the benefits of this insurance policy, visitors to the country must stay at a hotel in the Dominican Republic. The insurance assistance plan will be applied starting on September 15 until December 31, 2020.
As of September 15, the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival has been eliminated. In addition, starting on September 15, a diagnostic breath test for COVID-19 will be performed randomly on 3-10% of arriving travelers.During a visitor’s stay in the Dominican Republic, it is mandatory to use face masks and respect social distancing.
The Dominican government also noted that these protocols are in the process of being certified by the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels and Bureau Veritas, both world leaders in certifications of the sector.
