Tourism in Cancun and Riviera Maya is approaching record levels again as the world gradually regains its desire to travel. Projects delayed by the pandemic are back on track, including those needed to improve infrastructure and enhance road safety. This was the message last week in Cancun, where state and federal government officials along with ASUR (Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste) officials – the group that manages several airports in Mexico – announced two major construction projects to expand and improve the main arteries providing access to Cancun, the Riviera Maya, and the Cancun International Airport.
Work on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard will begin almost immediately as a part of a government plan to increase the quality of the region’s roads and improve access to local towns and communities. Colosio Boulevard is the main artery that connects the city center of Cancun with the airport and Riviera Maya, driving the urgency of getting this project started. Simultaneously, a ‘sister’ project will begin to expand the highway interchange that connects the Cancun International Airport to Cancun, the Cancun Hotel Zone, and the Riviera Maya. The plan consists of reconstructing the road surfaces with hydraulic concrete, including the lateral lanes, and adding/improving illumination.
Historical investment with great positive impact
It is estimated that this project will benefit over 1.324 million inhabitants and create 356 direct and 1,432 indirect jobs for the region. The expansion and enhancements of the roadways are expected to provide significant improvement to the area’s tourism infrastructure and economic development.
During the roadwork, state and municipal authorities, tourism transport companies, airport authorities, and tour operators, will proactively coordinate the best mobility and logistics strategies to diminish the impact on the flow of traffic, including identifying alternate routes and scheduling construction overnight when traffic is significantly reduced.
We want to let you know that:
- The travel time to and from Cancun’s airport will take longer.
- Amstar has adjusted departure transfers pickup times during peak traffic times to reflect longer journey times – and
- Amstar has allocated additional vehicles to support transportation services when required.
- While most excursions are operating normally, consider recommending to your customers that they book excursions and activities near their resorts when options permit.
