What to do while in the tropical paradise that is Jamaica? Star blogger and Senior Customer Service Executive at Amstar Ava Ana Waite provides us with a review of the Appleton Estate rum tour.
Jamaica is a land of unique experiences, engaging activities, breathtaking landscapes and warm, welcoming people. We are the social and cultural hub of the Caribbean. Experienced travellers and seasoned jetsetters who know the playgrounds of the Caribbean come back to Jamaica again and again.
With so many things to see, do and experience in Jamaica, it’s sometimes hard to decide between which tour to take or which place to visit. I recently took a tour of the Appleton Estate and it’s definitely a tour I highly recommend.
Appleton Estate Rum Tour
Our fantastic journey began with a comfortable ride that took us to the Appleton Estate. The gorgeous property is located in the extremely fertile Nassau Valley, where the sunshine and warmth of the morning transition into the soft tropical rains of the afternoon.
It is here in this rich and vibrant region where the world’s fourth best-selling rum is produced.
Appleton has been perfecting the art of making handcrafted rum for over 260 years, so a tour of Appleton Estate is like a tour through time—an inside look at how the finest rum in the world is made.
This insightful lesson on the history of Jamaican Rum took us all through the estate where we got to see earlier methods of how juice is removed from sugar cane. Our guided tour enlightened us as to the artifacts that illustrate the history of rum, which is also a major aspect of Jamaica’s history and national identity. We then visited the distillery and the aging house where our rum rests in oak barrels for up to 50 years.
We also got a chance to meet and pet the resident donkey “Pax.”
The best part of our tour, however, was saved for last. At the end of the tour, we got to sample 16 different types of rum and freshly squeezed sugar cane juice!
On our reluctant departure, we stopped by the gift shop, where we saw a full arrangement of Apple Estate Jamaica rums as well as Appleton souvenirs that we purchased to take home.
