Cancun has a fairly new architectural pearl: the new Cancun Maya Museum. It shows a very interesting collection of pre-Hispanic finds from Cancun, the rest of the state of Quintana Roo, and the Yucatan Peninsula. The large, modern and well illuminated showrooms expose a variety of objects that have been found in the archaeological areas of the State. You can visit this amazing museum independently, a great addition to your list of guided tours and activities in Cancun.
Where is the Cancun Maya Museum?
First of all, the Mayan Museum in Cancun is located in the middle of the Cancun Hotel Zone. It is surrounded by green areas of tropical vegetation. Inside the museum grounds, you can find San Miguel, a small archaeological zone with several temples and altars.
The Cancun Maya Museum ruins offer a very nice visit and a short break from Cancun water and beach activities. Even more, you’ll get a great look into the cultural roots of Cancun’s Mayan origins. Learn about the way they hunted and built weapons, and ask a guide about the importance of the Maya temazcal cleansing ritual.
Additionally, the museum opens a window into the cultural wealth of the region. The museum’s collections include pottery pieces, sculptures, and other archaeological finds. The knowledge you gather here will complement your experience of visiting the famous pre-Hispanic ruins of Tulum, Coba, and Chichen Itza.
