La Romana – A place of history and food!

La Romana is an old city located in the Eastern side of the Dominican Republic. Its name originated back in the sixteenth century, when a couple of Roman scales were used to weight the goods that came through the port! La Romana’s history includes not only important deeds and people, but also food.

People from La Romana eat an important amount of fish and seafood and by now have come up with many different ways to prepare them. Dominican recipes are varied and they can come with a side of rice or other dishes, like cooked plantains or potatoes.

Local fishermen go out every morning from La Caleta and Bayahibe to bring back some of the delicious delicacies of the Caribbean Sea. Traditional fish markets sell the daily catch and you can find some in Libertad Avenue. It is one of the most famous and important avenues of the city, so you can try to find a great restaurant or food stand there.
