My wife and I took three excursions with Amstar when we were in Cancun in October of 2017. Bernice Jimenez at the Amstar desk for Secrets Playa Mujeres was very helpful in providing information and advice to what to expect since as part the training enabled her to experience these safe, educational, and entertaining trips in the beautiful Cancun and Rivera Maya area.
Our first adventure was a sailing, snorkeling, and visit to Isla Mujeres. This was my first experience of seeing the beauty of aqua colored water near the island. We also snorkeled in the ocean, and later, enjoyed a delicious lunch aboard the sailboat with cold refreshments. After landing on Isla Mujeres, we toured the market and layed down on the islands white sand beach. Others toured the small island on souped-up golf carts but still had time later to shop. On the way back in the later afternoon, we sipped drinks as we sailed and the day came to an end. The crew were very personable, fun, and provided excellent service and attention.
The second adventure took us to the Mayan City of Tulum which is south of Playa del Carmen. Our guide Mata gave us an excellent tour of Tulum, a coastal city with white sand beaches and stunning aqua water. A smaller city than Chichen Itza, it was fascinating seeing ruins of buildings that stood the test of time. The Mayans charted the movements of the sky and stars to create a calendar to keep track of the changes as time passes through the year. Later, Mata led us as we traveled to a river to snorkel with fishes of many different colors and to feel the mixing of salt water of the ocean and fresh water from the river.
Last, we traveled to an underground cenote, a sinkhole, which was enclosed, and not open, but a cavern. We swam in crystal clear water among the stalactites in a dark cave that was lighted with bright lights and our hands were guided ropes to keep us on the pathway. Heading back through the jungle, we stopped at a beach club for lunch on the beach and listened to a rock band as we ate and drank a well-deserved meal.
The third trip was a sunset cruise out towards Isla Mujeres. Although it was overcast, the cruise was terrific. We ate individual trays of food, drank refreshing drinks as we danced the night away. The boat was the same size as the first trip, but we only have 9 passengers on this trip. We were able to see that Isla Mujeres is really two parallel strips of land separated by a water where people could dock their fishing, sail, boats or yachts. Very cool!!!!!
