The areas around Cabo and heading up into the Sea of Cortez possess an incredible array of marine life. So much so, in fact, that Jacques Cousteau, the world-famous explorer, and environmental protectionist, referred to the sea surrounding Baja California Sur as the “world’s natural aquarium.”
What Are the Amazing Nature Activities in Cabo?
There’s a wealth of activities and things to do you all year round in Los Cabos. The Bay of Los Cabos is unmatched for whale watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, flyboarding, and kayaking. Moreover, the pristine golden beaches and rugged beauty of El Arco make for a perfect romantic getaway. Finally, without further ado, here are the most amazing nature activities in Cabo waiting for you:
1. Whale Watching
The most awe-inspiring moment in the bay happens during the winter months (December through April). This is when you have the opportunity to marvel at one of the world’s most moving natural phenomena—the courtship, mating and birthing process of the majestic Humpback whale on the whale watching photo safari. This amazing experience brings you close to one of the most impressive and beautiful creatures on the entire planet.
2. Swimming with Whale Sharks
About a 90-minute drive out of Cabo, from October to April La Paz is host to the largest fish and friendliest shark on the planet—the Whale Shark. If you’re lucky enough to be in Los Cabos during whale shark season, make sure you take a day off from the R&R at your resort and head out to the heart of the former capital where you can swim with these gentle giants just off the main Malecon (boardwalk). This is one of the top seasonal nature activities in Cabo!
3. Snorkeling in Los Cabos
When traveling to Cabo, snorkeling at Lover’s beach is one of the things you must do in the area. Discovering the colorful underwater world is probably the most popular past time among travelers. Just a short boat ride out of the bay and you can explore one of many secluded areas teeming with marine life.
Tropical ocean fauna includes the giant leatherback turtle, sea lions, manta rays, squid, seahorses, starfish, and lobster. With so many brightly colored anemones and ocean dwellers, you are likely to encounter marlin, puffer fish, angel fish, trumpet fish and many more stunning creatures under the ocean’s surface.
4. Observing Sea Turtles
On the west coast, long stretches of secluded beaches, pounded by the Pacific Ocean, are home to giant turtles who return every year to make their nests on the beaches. From August to October, these deep sea creatures can be seen, mostly at night, crawling up the coastline to lay their eggs.
Local associations patrol the beaches protecting the turtles and their young from all types of predators. Located in Rancho San Cristobal, a secluded ranch located on a long stretch of stunning beach, not only can you find turtles here as this is also home to a family of young and friendly camels who offer gentle rides in front of the ocean, where its normal during the winter months to also observe the giant humpback whales. Defiantly a hidden paradise that must not be missed!
5. Monster zip lines
Get in touch with nature and enjoy an amazing outing during the Cabo monster zip line tour. This eight-line tour is probably one of the best circuits in Mexico. Fly above Baja California hanging over 300 feet above the ground. The longest one with 2,673 feet in length invites you to breathe in nature while having an amazing ride. The zip lines cross canyons, passing close to rock formations and watching the oasis below from bird’s eye view.
