Ixtapa is not just a beach destination, it’s a peaceful beach destination. And people here know it and celebrate it. On February 4-9, 2014 the community of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo will host its 4th Annual Celebration of Peace and Re-Certification as a “Culture of Peace Community.” It will take place during the Zihuatanejo Sail Fest, sponsored by the “Por Los Niños” Charity. This year, the theme is “Education for Peace.”
Why is Ixtapa peaceful?
Basically, being a “Culture of Peace Community” means that all segments of the society – from the government to businesses and residents – work together to ensure that their young ones learn the basic human values of the community. In other words, everyone makes sure that kids grow up to be fine people.
In today’s world of technology, children can be constantly exposed to violence, wars or conflicts. That is why we must teach them about the values of peace. Since 2010, Ixtapa has been working on creating a sustainable peace-building process. There’s even a Peace Monument to serve as a reminder!
For four years now, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo has worked with the United Nations to celebrate the International Day of Peace on September 21st. And later on, when it’s not raining, the Celebration of Peace takes place.
Here in Ixtapa, we want our children to be peaceful knowing that it will improve their quality of life in many ways. Not only will they be more relaxed and happy, it will continue to attract other people to our beautiful destination. We’ve already got the beautiful beaches, fun activities and incredible surroundings. Now we’re working on educating the next generation so they keep them all as gorgeous as they are while maintaining their peaceful quality.
We know that building a “Culture of Peace” takes time – and, it must be done by example. That’s why the community of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo has designed various workshops and projects to teach these values of peace. We’ve even collaborated with universities in the USA in the past, when we worked with “Diversity” as the theme of the celebration. You can learn more about this project at: www.FreedomPathways.org.
Education for Peace
This year, we’re excited about the theme “Education for Peace.” More and more institutions, organizations and businesses are volunteering to support this effort in very creative and innovative ways. We’ll have career days, workshops, art lessons, music, conservation projects and more!
