Pirates have been part of popular stories that have intrigued and captured many of us since we were little. These emblematic characters of interesting hats, eye patches, wooden legs, hooks instead of hands and bushy beards have a certain mystique about them that always seems to draw us in.
Pirates are part of successful books, children’s stories and Hollywood movies (Pirates of the Caribbean and Captain Jack Sparrow ring any bells?)… And of course, they’re a big part of the history of the Caribbean islands, including the Dominican Republic.
Back in the year 1586, the famous and well known English pirate Sir Francis Drake arrived at La Hispaniola (nowadays the Dominican Republic). The island was under Spanish domain after being discovered by Christopher Columbus, so he wanted to do what pirates do: get treasures!
The powerful pirate arrived with a fleet of 21 ships and 2,000 men, of which 1,200 came down onto the island. They took Santo Domingo and demanded a ransom from the Spanish authorities. Times were different, so it took about 30 days for everything to be settled. In the meantime, pirates burned down most of the city. Once they were paid, however, the pirates returned to sea.
Nowadays, we can live part of this story in a great pirate adventure: the Caribbean Buccaneers tour! It is an interactive show that takes place in a spectacular pirate galleon! The ship was especially designed for all the special effects and impressive acrobatics that astound all participants.
This amazing pirate spectacle makes you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. You get to experience the (almost real) pirate adventure that took place in these waters so long ago. It’s truly an unforgettable tour! Plus, it includes a delicious dinner in a platform in the middle of the sea and it’s perfect for the whole family. Children, we know, are the ones who love pirates the most so this adventure is perfect for them!
