Four Great Places to Shop in Cancun

Knowing where to buy gifts and make purchases while on vacation can be difficult. With all the shopping malls, markets and street vendors, it can all be very confusing. But never fear! We make it easy for you with a list of four great places for shopping in Cancun.

Do you go shopping when you go on vacation?

At some point while on vacation, the time comes when you decide to go shopping. Most people take the opportunity to get out of the all-inclusive resort to find some gifts for the loved ones who stayed at home. This is when the search for something attractive, original and at a great price begins!

One of your first challenges when you begin your shopping journey, of course, is knowing where to go.

Although there are many great places to shop in this Caribbean paradise, what is best for you depends on what you are looking for and whether or not you like to negotiate over the price. Here are 4 great places recommended by our destination expert Dorte Nielson to shop in Cancun:

Plaza Kukulkan

Plaza Kukulkan has a variety of different national and international stores. Its great location in Cancun’s Hotel Zone makes it the perfect place to take a break from the sun and wander through an air-conditioned modern Mexican shopping mall.

Luxury Avenue is part of Plaza Kukulkan in Cancun

Make sure you visit the Concept Store, located in the part of Plaza Kukulkan known as Luxury Avenue. The Concept Store is a must for fashion lovers looking to find the latest in Latin American designs.

Plaza Las Americas

Plaza Las Americas is located in downtown Cancun. It is Cancun’s largest shopping mall and is well-visited by locals and tourists alike. You can basically find anything you are looking for here. Moreover, Plaza Las Americas has a great movie theater offering the latest films, some of them in 3D and 4D.

It is about 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone and easy to reach by public transportation or taxi. If you prefer to spend the day shopping in Cancun or visiting various parts of the city, you can also arrange for private transportation. That way you don’t have to worry about carrying everything around.

Plaza La Isla

Plaza La Isla is a gorgeous shopping mall located in the heart of the Hotel Zone. The mall’s tropical design blends in perfectly with the landscape.

Playing host to top international stores and the most trendy brands, La Isla also offers several great restaurants right at the edge of Nichupte Lagoon. These are great places to sit, have a drink, eat some good food, people watch, and if you need your fix, catch up on some sports.

What really stands out about La Isla, however, is the mall’s Interactive Aquarium. A great place to spend an afternoon with the entire family!

Market 28 (Mercado 28)

Located in the heart of downtown Cancun, the famous Market 28 (Mercado 28) is a set of artisan shops, restaurants, and typical products of Mexico. The whole place is like being in a small Mexican village. It is easy to get to the Market 28 from the Hotel Zone and is definitely worth the adventure. Here the vendors greet you and invite you into their stores, where you can search for some great souvenirs to take home with you while haggling over the price.

Tip: ask around at the restaurants to find who sells “chaya”. Chaya is a plant native to the Yucatan Peninsula. Similar to spinach, chaya is either eaten or used for making juice. At Market 28 you will find chaya juice mixed with sugar, pineapple, and lemon. Not only is this drink extremely delicious and refreshing, it is also very nutritious!
