Rio Secreto – Unique Underground Adventure

The Yucatan peninsula is interconnected by a widespread system of underground rivers. These are in some places visible as open beautiful lagoons or ‘cenotes’ (natural sinkholes), famous in the peninsula for its variety in size and its beautiful crystal clear waters. One of the most amazing adventures that leave visitors breathless is a visit to Rio Secreto – an enormous system of rivers under the earth in the jungles of the Quintana Roo- state.

Rio Secreto is located 5 minutes from Playa del Carmen, heading south for Tulum. Once checked in, a van will take groups for about 15 minutes into the tropical forest. In this remote point of exotic nature the reduced group of participants will be welcomed by experienced guides. With all the necessary information for the excursion, and thereafter invited to enter the cave that leads to a world that seems of incredible wonder and mystery. There is a total silence, except the sound of soft endless drops that fall into the water from the stalagmites and stalactites in a world of caves, tunnels, vaults and lagoons of crystal water; a micro-universe that has been formed over thousands of years in silence under the ground.

The Rio Secreto Experience

The whole Rio Secreto tour lasts 3,5 hours (approximately 1,5 hour under the ground). The tour is accessible for both adults and children from 4 years old (not recommendable for pregnant women, persons affected with heart conditions, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, hypertension and claustrophobia). Before entering the cave each participant puts on a wetsuit, a helmet and a life jacket. There will be parts to walk and smaller parts to swim as well. Get to know this natural wonder.
