A couple of hours south of Cancun, on the coasts of Quintana Roo, unfolds the incredible eco adventure at the biosphere in Sian Kaan, whose name in Maya language means “Origin of the sky”. This large ecosystem has mangroves, lagoons, canals, semi-dry areas and part of the sea with reefs along the coast. Apart from a great diversity of flora and fauna, the biosphere contains no less than 23 pre-Hispanic archaeological sites of the ancient Maya civilization!
The Sian Kaan tour is an interesting combination of Maya culture and wonderful encounters with nature in one of the most beautiful spots. It started with a visit to a small place in the jungle where locals elaborate natural chewing gum. Our kind host, after greeting us in Mayan, told us the entire process for extracting the gum, from cutting the trees of chicozapote to obtain the thick liquid, to boiling it and kneading it. The real and natural gum that results from this is actually exported to many countries. It’s fascinating to learn about the origin of brands such as Adams and try the product in its most natural form.
When we returned to land with the boat our driver had prepared a delicious mini-picnic of fresh fruit, water and nuts on a table under a tree. Perfect and just what you want after spending time in the water.
The tour continued to a big cenote (open sinkhole) where we also did some snorkeling. This place is very different from the one before and very representative of the peninsula of Yucatan. A natural wonder with crystal-clear water, caves and caverns, some open to daylight, others closed. Snorkeling in these caves and seeing under the water create new dimensions… Everything is so clear, you see the water coming from underground rivers and even one and another small turtle passing closely by. After this refreshing and fascinating experience, we were more than ready to enjoy a delicious Mexican meal in a nearby family restaurant.
Thus ended this tour and in a couple of hours we were comfortably back in Cancun, satisfied in every way by having lived an experience so unique, and impressed by the wonders that nature offers us.
