Among the many attractive tours that exist in the Mexican Caribbean, I would like to mention an option that I recently got to know and that really fascinated me: the Tulum-Akumal tour. I’m sure individual travelers, couples and families with children alike will enjoy this tour that offers some of the most emblematic and special attractions in this area of Mexico. Specifically, these are:
· Snorkeling at coral reefs in a tropical bay among big sea turtles
· Exploring Maya temples in the most beautiful location next to the Caribbean Sea
The Tulum-Akumal Tour
Our tour began in Akumal (name meaning place of turtles in the Mayan language) where after a good snorkel introduction and having received the equipment we entered into the warm sea of the beautiful Bay of Akumal directly from the beach. The reef is close to the shore and the snorkeling is done at a depth of few feet.
We floated comfortably in our vests as we snorkeled and observed the white sand bottom lit by the sun. Then, suddenly and to our great joy, we saw the first manta rays swimming underneath us as well as large sea turtles grazing algae at the bottom of the sea without fearing us.
Our guide explained to us that both the rays and turtles are very used to people snorkeling around them and therefore there is no reason to fear the animals—neither do they fear us. We floated in this paradise, enjoying wonderful coral reefs with lots of colorful fish and animals. It’s fascinating to be able to see all this and still being so close to the shore of the tropical beach.
After a small snack, we headed for Tulum, where our guide took us on a journey through time to the beautiful Mayan temples. Tulum, which means ‘wall’, is from the late Maya epoch and is thus one of the most “recent” archaeological sites (approx. 1200 years A.C.). Moreover, Tulum is located next to the Caribbean Sea, which gives it a unique beauty with the alluring turquoise seascape as a backdrop.
After an interesting visit to some of the temples and most important buildings we had free time to go discover the ruins on our own or to cool off from the heat in the Caribbean Sea. It was wonderful to conclude the visit this way and see Tulum from the seaside as did the Mayan sailors in their canoes more than 800 years ago.
Having so much fun the day went by really fast. Soon our time at the Tulum ruins was up; next up was a delicious lunch. We were taken to a pleasant open-air restaurant in Akumal, where the table was set up for the group under the palm trees and overlooking another tropical bay of Akumal.
Here we enjoyed a rich dish of Mexican food, beer soft drinks and water. This was definitely the perfect spot to finish a wonderful day in which we enjoyed, observed and learned a lot of new things.
