What to eat in Ixtapa – Zihuatanejo?

Eating in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo is an adventure in its own. All preferences can be indulged thanks to the wide variety of delicious food that can be found here. Whether you like a fancy restaurant or a traditional stand, Ixtapa has places and dishes that will satisfy your palate and delight your eyes!

I like telling my guests that if they are looking for fast food they won’t easily find commercial hamburgers and pizzas. For us, fast food corresponds more to our famous tiritas de pescado (fish strips) or a bolillo relleno (bread filled with pork).

Tiritas have their own legend. They say a fisherman was adrift and he had nothing to eat but raw fish, chili, onion, and lime. He cut the fish into little strips along with the onion, chili, and lime, so the fish would get cooked in it. For 3 days this was all he could eat until he got rescued. Now this dish is the most representative of this area. Something you shouldn’t miss while visiting Ixtapa!

Seafood, in general, is a must while in Ixtapa, but fish a la talla is particularly so. This dish is a typical and original way of cooking here in the state of Guerrero. You can try it in some of the tours that include lunch, such as the Eco Lagoon tour, Ixtapa Island, or Las Gatas Beach.

One of my favorite restaurants is La Casa Vieja (the old house). It has a Mexican and calm ambiance, where the owner, Caty, will personally take care of you. This place is a landmark of Zihuatanejo, famous for its delicious tuna steak.

If you feel like experiencing something unknown but quite delightful, Tentaciones is the right place to go. Featuring a menu that unveils, dish by dish, the best-kept secrets of its fusion cuisine, this restaurant enjoys a breathtaking view of Zihuatanejo Bay.

These are only a few suggestions on what to enjoy during your next trip to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, but if you want more tips or some help on finding the perfect shrimp cocktail, ask the Amstar representative at your hotel or give us a call!
