If you’re traveling for the first time to the Dominican Republic, you’ve probably asked yourself what to pack for La Romana. Good question, especially if you’re not accustomed to tropical environments.
While each person has his or her own needs, these top La Romana packing tips will make your next trip to this tropical gem that much more enjoyable.
Tip #1: Pack light
The first and most important of all our tips on what to pack when traveling to this amazing tropical getaway is sometimes hard to achieve but one that will save you many an unnecessary headache: pack light.
Tip #2: Bring the right clothes
This point is especially true if you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort. You see, in addition to your beach outfits and sandals you will also need what is often called “casual formal” attire. For men, that basically means long pants, closed toe shoes and a collared shirt (in other words, no shorts, sandals or tank tops). For women that translates into simply something a little dressier. Other than that, dress and pack light.
Tip #3: Take along your favorite sunscreen
Like almost all other products you might need, sunscreen is widely available throughout the Dominican Republic. And while it’s fine to purchase it and many other things (more on that later) in your destination, consider doing so at home with this product if you have a particular brand or type of sunscreen you prefer.
Tip #4: Know what not to bring
This point is closely linked to the first point. In fact, knowing this will make the former even that much more realistic. So what shouldn’t you bring? To start, everything you don’t need, then whittle it down from there. Remember, simple things like hats, diapers, towels and anything bulky that is not essential can be bought at a local grocery store or market. By traveling light and not overpacking, you’ll have less luggage to worry about and more room to bring back some nice souvenirs.
Tip #5: Make copies of all travel documents
While you will always need to travel with the originals, once you arrive at the hotel you can place them in the hotel room safe and forget about them. Make copies of all essential documents, including passports and tickets, scan them and send yourself a copy via email. Tip#6: Make sure any medications come with a doctor’s prescription
Make sure that any medications you might be taking with you are accompanied by a doctor’s prescription. Furthermore, it’s important that you calculate the time that you will be away and ensure that you have a large enough supply of medicine in case of any emergency.
Tip#7: Bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes
This is a tip that you will be very happy you followed, especially if you are planning any kind of excursions that involved a good dose of walking, such as cultural tours. This is also important if you are organizing a trip to Mexico, for instance, and have large feet. Other than perhaps sandals at a larger supermarket chain, you may be hard-pressed to find your size. Plus, the inside of your shoes are always a great storage space when packing.
Tip#8: Good sunglasses are a must
Like good shoes, good sunglasses are an essential take-along product that you’ll be thankful for having brought with you. Remember, if you’re traveling with Amstar then you are probably planning a trip to some spectacular beach destination with lots of sun, where the reflection of the solar rays with the white sand that embraces the Caribbean Sea can be a bit harsh on the eyes. So make sure you bring along a pair of lookers that also have sufficient UV protection.
Tip#9: A second travel credit card will keep you safe
While this one falls more into the category of travel hack than travel tip, whatever you want to call it, it’s a good idea. To begin with, let your bank know the exact dates and places of when and where you will be traveling abroad. Doing so will help you get your card from getting blocked. Second, get a travel credit card with a defined limit on it. Take that card with you whenever you are out, and leave your main credit card in the hotel safe in case you have an emergency.
Tip#10: Rain jackets for rainy seasons
La Romana is a tropical destination with a 4 month rainy season. Don’t plan to just sit behind those all-inclusive walls waiting for the rain to pass. Do yourself a favor: get a lightweight rain jacket. You can get the yellow fishermen-style rain ponchos in La Romana, but a lightweight waterproof windbreaker will be a great addition to your travel attire. It will keep you exploring come rain or shine.
