The Wondrous World of Chichen Itza

I lost count of the times that I’ve visited Chichen Itza over the years! From my early days in Mexico at the beginning of the 1990’s, Chichen Itza has always been one of my “mandatory” visits almost every year. No matter where I was in Mexico at the time.

I became fascinated by the history of this incredible archaeological site from my very first trip: its architecture, majestic sculptures and monuments, but above all, the magic that surrounds this beautiful place. Back in the 1990’s, it was still possible to climb the pyramid and look across the endless Yucatan peninsula that surrounds the area. This has been prohibited in order to protect the ancient temples, but you can still feel the immensity of nature that embraces this religious site of the ancient Maya.

The impressive architecture in Chichen Itza reflects an interesting fusion of Toltec and original classical Maya cultures that is embodied in the very frequent use of skulls, pillars, columns and other typical symbols of the cultures of Central Mexico. It is completely understandable that Chichen Itza has been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and that thousands of people make the trip to visit this place every year.
